LEFKADA - The Greek island of Lefkada

Lefkada is situated north of the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca, opposite the coast of Aetoloacarnania`s prefecture (province of Vonitsa). Lefkada and Aetoloacarnania`s prefecture are separated by a narrow strip of sea, which has width of 25m at its most narrow part. Till the 7th century Lefkada was a peninsula of the west coast of Greece with which it was united. However the Corinthians cut the isthmus and separated Lefkada from the opposite land. Despite this fact, Lefkada didn`t completely lost its links with Epirotic Greece.
The communication between them is transacted through two bridges, a mobile one which is 25m over the canal and a bigger one over the salt lake. South-east of Lefkada there are saved the ruins of the ancient city, remains of its theater and its walls, of which it appears that it was one of the bigger Greek cities

Lefkada ‘s geographic coordinates are 38-34 until 38-51 north latitude and 20-34, 20-45 east lengh. The north coast of Lefkada is the Cape of Santa Mavra and the south is the Lefkatas Cape which is only five miles away from Kefalonia. The island ‘s area is 288 or 293 square km and the total surface is approximately 321.000 acres.
A sea path which was opened in the Antiquity by the Corinthians and later formed by the English in 1818 on the north coast right next to the castle of Santa Mavra, leads the boats from the calm east side of Lefkas to the Ionian Sea. Today there is a pontoon bridge in the sea path which connects Lefkada with the Akarnania mainland.
Lefkada (from the word “lefko” which means white in greek)was named after the white rocks of Cape Lefkatas which Homer used to call “white rocks” or “white edge”. On this Cape, where the sailors faced the rage of the wind and the sea, the ancient temple of God Apollo was situated. Menandros, in one of his poems, mentions the myth of the lyric poetess Sapfo who gave a desperate end to her life by falling off the Cape when young Faon denied her love.

As the waves of the deep blue sea break on the endless white beaches of Lefkada, the love and the myth appear and the poets are born. Lefkada is totally white, surrounded by waves and white beaches. The sunset is magic and bloody red as it sinks in the sea aura. In the summer when the sun sets the lefkadian sky fills with thousands of stars and the plash of waves whispers endless secrets. The uncaptured greatness of nature can carry away those who seek for adventure and wish to live an unrepeated experience, through green coasts and sandy beaches.

History of Lefkada island
The history of Lefkada has its traces back in the early centuries. According to Aristoteles, the Leleges were the first inhabitants of the island. The archeological research of the German archeologist W.Dorpfeld claims that the first evidence of life in Lefkada exists in the neolythic era in the middle of the 4th millenium b.C.. Dorpfeld also supports in his theory that Lefkada is the homeric Ithaca. The ancient people Ahei are followed by the ancient Doriis who establish the town of Nirikos.
In 625 b.C. the Corinthians took over the island and constructed the sea path of Lefkada, one of the biggest achievements of the Antiquity, considering the fact that they had to eliminate the thin land which connected the island with the mainland. Lefkada participated in the sea battle of Salamina in 480 b.C., in the battle of Plataies and the Peloponnesian War in 431 b.C..In 338 b.C. it was conquered by the father of Alexander the Great, Filippos 2nd. Later the Romans became the new conquers of the island. After the establishment of Nicopolis from Octavious August around 31 b.C. , many Lefkadians colonise the surrounding area.
During the Byzantine era the island was given by the nobleman Lord Nikiforos 1st to the Count Orsini who began to build the castle of Santa Mavra. After that a period of…… Venice follows.
The Venetians transferred the capital from the mainland of the island to its contemporary location. They took advantage of the agricultural production (oil, serials, wool) and organised the social life with administration, obligatory taxes and plat book. In 1797 when Napoleon Vonaparte destroyed Venice , Lefkada was taken over by the French and finally in 1810 by the English. In 1815 with the Treaty of Paris the Seven Islands became an independent state with the name “United states of the Seven Islands” under the protection of Great Britain.
In 1864 the Seven Islands are re-united with Mother Greece and from then on they have a common historical route. This was, in a few lines, the long and hard history of Lefkada
